What is Autism Awareness?
Autism Awareness is normally referred towards the month of April, where it's globally recognised to 'raise awareness'. To show support throughout the whole year, people may wear blue or display the infamous "Puzzle Piece" (the puzzle piece signifies the autistic mind and how we think - still being a mystery to health professionals). Is awareness necessarily? Yes, as mentioned in the article, autism affects every host differently. You may have a family member, friend, co-worker or spouse/partner on the spectrum and not even know it.
“If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” - Dr. Stephen Shore What Are Autistic Traits?
Autism affect every host or person differently. Some of us may be really good with mathematics while others might be very athletic or have excellent writing skills. There are many traits or conditions that affect a person on the autism spectrum, below are a few that are identified within myself.
Autism Within The Music Industry
Being a music producer (beatmaker) and autistic has been challenging. Normally, a person in my position would be able to go out to the music clubs, college campuses, local bars and easily meet artists to work with or at the very least network and gain attention. Unfortunately, being on the spectrum can limit some of those options.
Lights, sounds, background foley, people, colors and the list goes on... can all have an impact on autistics and easily can cause us to have a meltdown or shutdown. This is hard to explain to an artist you just met and you are in the studio trying to create music with. When people (artists) have doubts in your ability the less likely they will work with you. It's a widespread joke about trap artists (who mumble rap) being autistic and even mumble rap autistic memes have surfaced across social networks making fun of autism. These are people who have no idea what autism is or what it is being an autistic person. Alien Loud celebrates autism awareness within the music industry. Aliens and Headphones
Like most autistic people, I grew up always thinking that I was an alien or some humanoid from another planet. Everyone just acted differently than I did and I always observed and tried to act just like them because I didn't want anyone to find out I was different.
Fascinated with ' Earth, Space and Science ', I thought if I could master the minerals and geology/star mapping that my mission on Earth with all these ' weird people ' would be over and my real family would come get me and take me away. I finally gave up on that mission in high school. Headphones become a lifesaver in middle school, high school and even today. Headphones help autistic people reduce the information being sent to our brains. Without all that crazy (normal to non-autistics) background noise we can adjust that attention towards sight or just feel a little more relaxed. Having headphones on also is a great way to help autistic people to not deal with interactions of other people when we don't want to be bothered. Unexpected interactions with people can throw us off and make us deal with a lot of anxiety or mental pains throughout the day/week. Alien Loud T-Shirts
In the 1960's parents thought a puzzle piece was the best way to label their children. Because of the way autistic people think and act and also due doctors not knowing how one becomes autistic, everyone agreed. There are a few groups of us autistic people who find the autism puzzle piece a little "over played" or misused. Why can't autistic people (some who are really great artists) create our own logo? ...We at Alien Loud are pleased to do so!
